As a self-initiated project, Grolsch beer cans’ modern and minimalistic design was chosen for a redesign experiment to include a heritage motif inspired by the rich history of the Dutch beer brand.
Grolsch is a heritage Dutch beer that was founded in the 17th century. To dive deeper into the beer brand’s centuries-old history, I looked into vintage Dutch kitchen and homeware to draw inspiration for the old-time Dutch environment the brand started to exist.
Taking cues from the mood board, a collection of vintage Dutch homeware and pictures, motifs such as flowers, colours, and patterns were generated to evoke a sense of original Dutch beer with a rich history. Every element was hand-sketched and transformed into a vector illustration.
The striped pattern at the bottom part of the can is from the rim of the traditional dress that women were seen wearing. The animal and flower symbols, as well as the use of vibrant colours were taken from the imagery to align with a crisp and refreshing taste of the Dutch pilsner.
